Once a month, West 3rd Common hosts our Beer Dinner during which we combine our culinary expertise with our passion for the finest craft beers. Every month we select one brewery and we build a delicious menu around the individual, unique beers from that brewery. Executive Chef Travis Yuen, who certainly loves beer more than anyone you’ve ever met, loves tickling your palate, while simultaneously promoting lesser known breweries, the beers you’re not used to seeing on the shelf of your local grocery store.

Bier International

Harlem’s first biergarten serving international and domestic bier and food. According to TimeOut New York this come-one, come-all “biergarten” brings brew-house cred to Harlem. Along with the eggs and produce, a teenaged Aldo began discreetly selling his homemade wine to a few loving Napans. Because his rural home phone was a “party line” frequented by nosy eavesdroppers, enterprising Aldo used a code name whereby his customers could order wine without the risk of revealing his secret zinfandel operation. Thus- “Black Chicken” was born-the nickname for a jug of homemade wine from young Aldo’s barrels hidden in his barn.

Established in 1988, John Allan’s is known for the Signature Full Service Treatment which includes a haircut, manicure and shoe shine. It also includes a scalp massaging shampoo and conditioner, hot towel and beverage. We serve various beverages such as coffee, lattes, iced tea and ice cold beer. INY: What is the JA experience? What makes John Allan’s different from other men’s barber shops? 

JA: I moved away from the standard barber approach. All John Allan locations employ seasoned, trained, and talented stylists. They work with each individual man and know how to cut and style the various textures and types of hair. They know what products to use when and most importantly they know how to make each client look good. 

Every single person that walks through the door is warmly greeted by a valet that takes coats and offers drinks. That’s the first difference. The service. From there, our clients receive scalp massages with John Allan shampoo and a hot towel wrap just because I want you to take a deep breath.

Next is the stylist consultation. Your stylist gives you what you want! There’s more. Our clients receive manicures while getting their haircuts. As a finishing touch, our famed shoe shines. I find it empowering for men to get a full service treatment, it provides for a much richer day. The proof is in the numbers. We’ve been doing this for 20 years. Once you walk in those doors, you’re hooked. 

INY: What skin and hair tips do you have for men during the cold winter months? 

JA: I think it’s important for men to trim there hair shorter and neater in the winter because there is so much more static in the cold dry air. In the summer you can find your inner surfer.

Most importantly however, is moisturizing! My cool face moisturizer, sold exclusively at Barney’s and John Allan locations, is a 2 in 1 product. It soothes skin, its very light, and can be used as an aftershave.

All my peers have great products so I wanted to take a different approach. I wanted to create something highly absorbent, something that seeps into the skin. 

In 2014 I’ll be launching my Black Line, an up-market skin and shave line sold exclusively at Barneys and John Allan locations. These products will be a gentleman’s must have! 

INY: What are your greatest accomplishments and achievements in creating the men’s full service approach?

JA: First of all our membership program taught guys how to take the chore out of haircuts. We made it more of an experience. We taught men how to commit to themselves when it comes to grooming.
